Crochet Baby Slippers

These crochet baby slippers are cute and not too difficult to make.  However, as far as I am concerned the instructions are a bit tricky to put into words, so rather than give you the written instructions first and then show you a video at the end, I am cutting to the chase and presenting the video first.  Scroll down for written instructions if you are brave enough!

Instructions for the Crochet Baby Slippers

You will need, double knitting yarn, or any yarn that recommends the use of 4mm knitting needles, and a 4mm hook or equivalent.  UK terminology used throughout. US terminology in brackets under abbreviations.

ABBREVIATIONS

st = stitch

sts = stitches

c = chain

sl st = slip stitch

sl sts = slip stitches

dc = double crochet (US single crochet)

htr = half treble (US half double crochet)

dc2tog = double crochet 2 together (US single crochet 2 together)

dc4tog = double crochet 4 together (US single crochet 4 together).  To do this: [insert hook into next stitch, yarn on hook and pull through] x4, yarn on hook and pull through all 5 loops on hook

tch = turning chain

BEGIN CROCHET BABY SLIPPERS BY MAKING THE UPPER

make 7 ch

1dc into 2nd ch from hook.  dc into every st to end (6 sts)

1ch, turn.  dc into every stitch

work 10 more rows in dc (total 12 rows)

Fasten off.

make another piece the same without fastening off.

make 1 more row of dc (total 13 rows) then without fastening off, work a 13th row on the first piece so that the 2 pieces are joined.  (12 stitches)

Now decrease for the toe:

Row 1

1ch, turn, 1dc, dc2tog, 6dc, dc2tog,1dc (10sts)

Row 2

1ch, turn, work 10dc

miss 1 stitch, dc4tog, sl st into last stitch

fasten off.

NOW MAKE THE SOLE

make 10ch

Round1

dc into second ch from hook

dc to the end of the ch (9sts)

Work 2 more dc into the last ch

Turn your work around and carry on along the bottom loops of the chain sts working 1dc into each loop and make a total of 5dc in the last loop.

(Note - you have already worked into the first loop when you did the 2 extra dc into the 9th chain, so do not do any more stitches here - see video if this is not clear)

sl st into the first stitch to join

Round 2

1ch turn

htr into the sl st

htr into next st

2htr into next st

1 htr into each of next 2 sts

8dc, 2dc into each of next 3 sts 8 dc

sl st into first st

Round 3

2ch, turn

htr into the sl st

1 htr into each of next 3 sts

7 dc

2dc into each of next 3 sts

7 dc

1 htr into each of next 3 sts

2htr into each of next 5 sts

htr into base of tch

sl st into top of tch

The 4th and final round is used to join the upper to the sole, so fasten off and break your yarn.

Fold the upper in half with the right sides together.  Crochet the back seam together using sl sts, working from the top edge to the bottom.  Turn the right way round.  Do not fasten off

Place the upper onto the sole.  Crochet them together through bothe layers using dc

fasten off

Darn in the ends and decorate your crochet baby slippers with a pompom, bow, flower or something similar.

The video below shows how to make a pompom quickly and easily
